CFD Aided Ship Design and Helicopter Operation

In support of Canadian industrial and defence ship design offshore helicopter operations, a series Ship–Helicopter Operational Limits Analysis Simulation (SHOLAS) projects are being conducted at the National Research Council Canada (NRC) in collaboration with Defence Development (DRDC). This study presents brief overview in-house airwake simulation capability combining high-fidelity wind-tunnel tests, full-scale sea trials, high-order computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools, realistic engineering-oriented flight simulators. paper reports challenges lessons learned during course study, discusses current capabilities limitations CFD tools infrastructure required, evaluates gaps barriers industry adoption by focusing on how they could be overcome based our practice.
